As we are entering the rainy season here in Korea, today I want to talk about vocabulary related to the rain.

sprinkling – light rain (It’s only sprinkling outside; you don’t need an umbrella.)

pouring – heavy rain (It was pouring, so they canceled the baseball game.)

raining cats and dogs – (idiom) heavy rain (It’s raining cats and dogs tonight.)

coming down – heavy rain (The rain is really coming down out there, be careful.)

falling – generic rain (The rain began falling just after 2pm.)

Rain can also be used as a verb. (It is supposed to rain tomorrow.)

(The verbs coming down and falling can also be used to talk about snow.)
